GCC Advisory Board Meeting sets out action plan for 2022/23

The Global Carbon Council (GCC) held its first Advisory Board Meeting for the year 2022 under the chairmanship of Dr. Yousef Al Horr at Mondrian Hotel, West Bay Lagoon, Doha, on May16. The meeting was attended by six (6) advisory board members, out of total eight (8) members, along with the GCC operations and stakeholder engagement teams.

During the event, GCC team discussed several subjects related to updates on the GCC Program and the Work Plan for 2022/23. Similarly, the advisory board shared important views and recommendations in support of the Program.

GCC’s latest Advisory Board Meeting kicked off with presentations by GCC operations team and leadership on topics including the development of new frameworks and standards, priorities based on the importance of mitigation areas and demand in the market, strengthening carbon marketplace as well as verifier accreditation processes/systems, further enhancement of stakeholders communication, creation of a stronger GCC brand, new accreditations for GCC, and mechanisms to avoid double accounting, double issuance and double selling.

The meeting also involved a brainstorming session on how the GCC Program can play a more significant role in global and regional mitigation activities, leading to the feedback from the board members who advised on the action plan for 2022 and 2023.

GCC advisory board members attending the session included Dr. John Kilani, Director of Sustainable Development at Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Ms. Prof. Mariam Al-Maadeed,  Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at Qatar University, Dr. Massamba Thioye, Manager in the Mitigation Division of the UNFCCC Secretariat, Mr. Saurabh Kumar, former Executive Vice Chairperson of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), Mr. Simon Henry, Director of Carbon Market Development at the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and Mr. Yosouf Abdulrahman Saleh Al-Salehi, Executive Director, Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP).

Following insightful discussions, GCC’s Advisory Board Meeting resulted in a fruitful exchange of ideas between the representatives of GCC operations, stakeholders engagement teams and GCC Advisory Board. The Board members agreed with the importance of strategic areas that GCC is venturing into, as well as with the plans to strengthen the marketplace and communication with various stakeholders in the dynamic post-Paris Agreement regime, where voluntary carbon markets will play a very significant role. At the same time, the event served as an important platform for the upcoming two-day GCC Steering Committee Meeting, scheduled to be held on May 23 & 24, 2022. After Steering Committee meeting GCC will publish the workplan of 2022-23.
