The Global Carbon Council (GCC) hosted an online workshop titled “Carbon Market, Carbon Units Programs & Links to the CORSIA Scheme Implementation” with an aim to share the latest developments in carbon markets and the potential of approved carbon offsets to decarbonize the global aviation industry. The workshop brought together representatives of international airlines as well as leading experts and stakeholders from all over the world.
The event that took place on 21 March 2023 opened with keynote speeches from Engineer Majed Al Atawi, Director Air Safety Department, Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, Engineer Abdannabi Manar, Director Arab Civil Aviation Organization, and Dr. Yousef Alhorr, Founding Chairman of GCC.
Dr. Yousef Alhorr said,
“The aviation industry has a crucial role to play in the global effort to tackle climate change, and carbon markets offer a powerful tool to help decarbonize this industry. By enabling the purchase of high-quality carbon credits, these markets provide a means for airlines to offset their emissions and work towards a more sustainable future. As a CORSIA-approved carbon market, Global Carbon Council provides a much-needed mechanism to help the aviation industry reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and meet its obligations. At GCC, we are committed to promoting the use of carbon markets as an instrument to reduce emissions from the aviation industry and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.”
Dr. Yousef Alhorr
During the workshop, senior members of GCC provided the audience with an overview of carbon markets in the context of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement ahead of COP28. Addressing a global audience, GCC members explained the significance of carbon credits approved by the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) of the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Alongside explaining the process of seeking ICAO’s approval, GCC’s experts also discussed how carbon markets can be used to offset emissions from the aviation industry and how this can help to reduce the industry’s impact on the environment.
The workshop also focused on no-harm to society/environment and sustainable development criteria explained through case studies for the selection of high-quality CORSIA-approved credits. Representatives of global airlines attending the event also learnt about steps airlines should take to meet the requirements of the first phase CORSIA compliance were also presented.
The workshop concluded with a Q&A session where participants had the opportunity to ask questions and clarify their doubts about carbon markets, carbon units programs and CORSIA scheme implementation.
Global Carbon Council has been at the forefront of climate mitigation and adaptation efforts, and has been working closely with governments, businesses and civil society organizations to develop innovative solutions to the global climate crisis. The recent workshop was a continuation of GCC’s efforts to normalize carbon markets as a means to achieve climate resilience.
