- Project Registration date 6th October 2024
- GCC has successfully registered 107 projects as of today.
As the Global Carbon Council (GCC) reflects on its journey, a remarkable milestone is being celebrated: The registration of the 100th project, the Dai Phong Wind Power Plant. This achievement signifies the hard work, dedication, and collaboration that have defined the community, marking a significant step towards Clime Action & Sustainable Future.
Overview of the Dai Phong Wind Power Plant
The Dai Phong Wind Power Plant, located in Thien Nghiep Commune, Mui Ne Ward, Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam, is a testament to the commitment to renewable energy. With a total installed capacity of 42 MW (10 wind turbines of 4.2 MW each), this wind project is expected to generate an average of 173,260 MWh of clean electricity annually, over the next ten years. This clean power will feed directly into Vietnam’s fossil fuel-dominant national grid, resulting in a remarkable reduction of 142,592 tons of CO2 emissions each year.
Methodology and Validation
The Dai Phong Wind Power Plant has been developed & assessed using the ACM0002 CDM methodology of UNFCCC, ensuring compliance with its applicability conditions for wind energy projects. Project adheres to the requirements of the selected monitoring methodology and the local and global stakeholder consultation processes. The project has successfully passed through rigorous validation by Bureau Veritas India Pvt. Ltd., confirming its adherence to all GCC and UNFCCC requirements and its positive contributions to environmental and social goals.
Contribution to Environment, Society, and Sustainable Development
The Dai Phong project is set to achieve Environmental and Social No-Harm Certifications (E+ and S+), ensuring it makes positive contributions while safeguarding both the environment and society.
As a renewable energy initiative, it helps reduce CO2 emissions by replacing fossil-fuel-based power in the grid, contributing to emission reductions. The project also monitors noise levels from wind turbines, ensuring compliance with local regulations and protecting nearby communities. It responsibly manages hazardous waste and end-of-life materials as they are handled and disposed of in an environment-friendly manner. The project protects biodiversity by ensuring that the wind turbines do not interfere with migratory bird paths or affect endangered species.
On the social front, the project creates long-term job opportunities, providing stable employment for local communities and ensuring a non-discriminatory workplace. Regular safety training is provided to all employees, ensuring their well-being by reducing the risks of accidents and maintaining health and safety standards. The project promotes skill development by offering on-the-job training that contributes to the overall development of their employees. Sanitation and waste management systems are in place, complying with local regulations to ensure a clean and safe working environment. The project also upholds strict labor standards, including prohibiting child labor, reflecting its commitment to ethical practices and social responsibility.
Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals
The project contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG-7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG-8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG-13 (Climate Action). It is expected to achieve a GCC silver SDG certification label (SDG+), reinforcing the commitment to sustainable practices and positive social impacts.
“Reaching this 100th project milestone is more than just an achievement; it exemplifies our enduring commitment to sustainable development,” stated Dr. Yousef Alhorr, Founding Chairman of the Global Carbon Council. “The Dai Phong Wind Power Plant, validated by Bureau Veritas India Pvt. Ltd. and built on the robust ACM0002 methodology, serves as an inspiring example of how renewable energy can catalyze significant greenhouse gas reductions. This project not only helps to bring us closer to a carbon-neutral future but also embodies our dedication to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It illustrates our collective responsibility to empower communities, drive economic growth, and protect our planet for future generations. Together, we are forging a sustainable path that will resonate for years to come.”
“Sustainability is fundamentally embedded in our system from the conceptualization stage of the Dai Phong Wind project. As a wind energy project, our core idea is inherently sustainable, but we have taken further steps to advance our sustainability goals. Our thinking of “Getting better by day,” serves as a platform for continuous improvement and fuels our growth. We ensure that our wind project contributes to carbon emission reductions, directly aligning with global climate objectives. At Dai Phong, we are committed not only to advancing green energy but also to creating positive impacts in the neighboring communities where we operate. Our Dai Phong Wind project delivers lasting social and environmental benefits, fostering a cleaner, more equitable future while supporting GCC’s mission to drive impactful climate action.” Emphasized Louis Aniban, CFO, Dai Phong Development Investment Joint Stock Company.
